"THE HOPE OF PEACE" -- PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Karl Jenkin's The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace
will be the core work of this program.
Composed in 1999, this large-scale anti-war composition
is based on the Catholic Mass,
with the addition of texts decrying the horrors of war
from diverse religious, poetic, and historical sources.
It's first and last movements quote a famous Medieval song,
"L'homme arme" ("The Armed Man"),
sung to celebrate the bravery of warriors.

Because this is our holiday program, I have elected to include
the main movements based on the Mass, but omit those illustrating war.
In their stead, we will insert works by various contemporary composers
that explore various aspects of peace.
